Business magnate Mukesh Ambani is reportedly planning to shut down Jio Cinema. Following the completion of the merger between Reliance’s subsidiary Viacom 18 and Star India, there are discussions to merge Jio Cinema with Disney+ Hotstar.

JioCinema platform could soon be shut down. When Reliance Jio announced free IPL streaming on its JioCinema it shook the entire market. Now, Mukesh Ambani might make a major decision regarding the platform.

The move comes as part of the $8.5 billion merger between Reliance and Walt Disney's media assets in India, announced in February 2024.

Reliance decides Disney+ Hotstar will absorb Jio Cinema post-merger, becoming the main streaming platform for sports and entertainment.

Reliance Industries currently holds the streaming rights for the IPL, while Hotstar holds the streaming rights for ICC events and other games. However, both entities have recently merged.

As of now, there is no official word on whether entertainment content from Jio Cinema and Disney+ Hotstar will be integrated, or if one platform will be discontinued post-transition. The merger received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in August 2024, and further updates on the future of the platforms are awaited.
