The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear an application seeking a direction to the Centre to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan mentioned the application before the threejudge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud seeking a listing of the application.

The Supreme Court has agreed to consider hearing a plea for statehood in Jammu and Kashmir. The apex court had previously upheld the revocation of Article 370 and called for assembly elections by September 2024.

The fresh application was filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, an academician, and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, a socio-political activist, in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a historic judgment last year, the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and stated that statehood should be restored to J-K 'at the earliest'.
