Chinese President Xi Jinping made a surprise trip this week to the province of Fujian, a coastal region approximately 110 miles from the island of Taiwan.

China's leader did not comment on the recent military exercises during his visit to the region, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Taiwan's newly elected president, Lai Ching-te, has been vociferously criticized by Beijing for rejecting its position that Taiwan is a part of China.
