Countless graduates are pouring onto the campus of Howard University this weekend for a celebration like no other.

Howard University is celebrating its 100th homecoming and with thousands of people expected to be in attendance this weekend, safety is a top priority. Every year, 60 to 70 thousand people come out to Howard’s homecoming to celebrate.

Imagine yourself in Washington in November 1924, promenading down U Street, the city’s “Black Broadway.” The street is lined with nightclubs and movie houses, including the landmark Howard and Lincoln theaters.

Celebrations for Howard University’s 100th homecoming kicked off Friday, and several D.C. roads are closed for the big weekend. These streets are closed from 12 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday: No parking or traffic is allowed on these streets from 7 a.

This year’s homecoming will not include the tailgate due to overcrowding and safety issues. Countless food vendors, blasting music and vibrant conversations in the Howard Center parking lot have made up the famous tailgate for many years. For this year’s homecoming, however, that is no longer a part of the lineup.
